The Surf Lodge Gabriola Island

THE SURF LODGE GABRIOLA ISLAND
The Surf Lodge on Gabriola Island is one of the best places to eat while simultaneously enjoying one of the best views. The sunsets on Orlebar point are epic! The property has been reopened with a restaurant, the aptly named Sunset Lounge and pub. There’s also accommodations available with rooms and cabins on the property.

THE FOOD
Pull up a seat on the front deck and enjoy an afternoon lunch at The Surf on Gabriola Island. If the weather isn’t agreeable, there’s seating inside too. There were a few notable highlights from the Surf Lodge menu for me. The miso mushroom gravy poutine was one of the best I’ve had in ages and smoked salmon crostini was unreal. Though the fresh mint tea and lemon cheesecake (as pictured below) were also delightful.

SCENERY & ACTIVITIES
After I temporarily mourned the fact that the hotel had filled in their front yard pool that overlooked the ocean (what a dreamy view), I was thrilled to see the yard used for games. Specifically croquet. My love of the movie Heathers, or more specifically my love of everything Winona Ryder does, has endeared the game of croquet to me. Am I good at it? Absolutely not. I simply enjoy pantomiming what I assume a good athlete would do while playing this game. Foolishly. I didn’t wear red to really get into the Heathers movie spirit, but this 70s blue paisley dress matched the set perfectly. If croquet doesn’t appeal to you, there’s always the option of walking the shoreline along Orlebar point which is right across the road from the Surf.

HANGING OUT AT THE SURF
Gabriola Island is full of hidden gems, some might say the island itself is a hidden gem! Despite not receiving the same coverage as other islands around Vancouver, it’s one of my favourite. I’m sure the locals are more than happy to keep this place a secret though! Much of its charm is in its aversion to big business and change. Which is probably why I’m so drawn to it and keep visiting every summer.
